Kingfisher Cottage is a charming 100 year old home which has recently been "Americanized" while still maintaining its "old world" atmosphere. It is situated right on the Grand Union Canal so that you can sit and relax in the garden or the conservatory and watch the canal boats go by or drop in a fishing line and perhaps snag dinner! Pets are NOT allowed, No Smoking.
The Navigation Inn, the nearest pub -- just a 29 1/2 second walk away -- is also on the canal, providing a wonderful venue to meet and interact with resident villagers and get a taste of local color. As our guests we would see to it that those introductions were arranged.
Just over the hump-backed bridge, the Navigation Boats are for hire -- from row boats to paddle boats to canal boats. Along the canal is a towpath providing many hours of walking in beautiful pastoral settings. Five minutes from the cottage is one of the deeper locks at ten feet. The lock is all hand operated and it's fascinating to watch the boats pass through.
Very close to the lock is one of the best Indian restaurants we've tried. There are five to six other pubs in the village, as well as a hotel, serving meals. One in particular serves a fabulous full course Sunday Dinner (lunch) for a fixed price of less than $7.50. There are also several take-out restaurants featuring Chinese, Indian, and Italian.
Barrow is located in the middle of hunt country and if you are a rider not only is horseback riding available but during the season joining a hunt is also possible. Golf and fishing are avidly endorsed by many of the locals and they would be happy to set you in the right direction.
Barrow upon Soar is a large village in northern Leicestershire, in the Soar Valley between Leicester and Loughborough. It has a population of around 5,000 and is part of the Charnwood local government district.
It lies, as its name indicates, on the east bank of River Soar (where the Fishpool Brook joins it), and is just opposite the A6 from Quorn. The village is on the Midland Main Line, and Ivanhoe Line trains stop at the Barrow-upon-Soar railway station.
The village is famous for having a plesiosaur excavated in its past, of species Rhomaleosaurus megacephalus, dubbed the 'Barrow Kipper'. The dinosaur was found in a lime pit outside of the village in 1851, and a roundabout with a sign representing its skeleton lies at the centre of the village. The actual bones are on display at the Leicestershire Museum and Art Gallery on New Walk in Leicester.
